NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - The Westminster College Symphony Orchestra will present its winter concert Tuesday, Feb. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Two Westminster College senior chemistry majors, Jacklyn Gates and Emily Stull, recently presented their posters at the National American Chemical Society Meeting held in Anaheim, Cal.
Gates poster is titled "Comparison of Particle Size and Morphology of Lutetium Oxide Formed via Precipitation Stripping Versus Traditional Stripping Methods." Gates is a daughter of Scott and Constance Gates of Meadville, and a graduate of Meadville Area High School.
Stull's poster is titled "Analysis of Ephedra and Non-Ephedra based Herbal Supplements: Effects on the Medabolic Rate in Mice and the Quantification of Active Ingredients." Stull is a daughter of Duane and Nancy Stull of Scottdale, and a graduate of Southmoreland High School.
The students traveled with Dr. Helen Boylan, assistant professor of chemistry at Westminster, who was an invited speaker at the meeting. Boylan presented an oral report in the Younger Chemists Committee session on career and development. Her talk was titled, "Teaching in the Small College Setting: Opportunities and Challenges in Academia." Boylan, who has been teaching at Westminster since 2001, earned her undergraduate degree at Westminster, and her Ph.D. from Duquesne University.

Dr. Carolyn Cuff, professor of mathematics at Westminster College, recently presented a paper at the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) meeting held in Atlanta.
"I presented the Nutritional Data of Crackers,' which presents interesting statistical aspects of data collected from the nutritional labels of cracker boxes," Cuff said. "The data set illustrates statistical concepts that instructors usually show using made up data."
Cuff just finished a term as chair of the Special Interest Group of the MAA in Statistics Education. The MAA is a national professional group of approximately 27,000 mathematicians focusing on undergraduate mathematics education.
Cuff, who has been with Westminster College since 1989, received her undergraduate degree from Westminster College, and master's and Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. Cuff's previous research, "How Do You Stack Up?" was published in the November issue of the Colleges and Mathematics Journal.

Shawn Reynolds, adjunct professor of oboe and English horn at Westminster College, will give an oboe recital Thursday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
The program includes Goossens' "Concerto for Oboe and Piano," Schwanterner's "Black Amemones," and three Silvestrini Etudes for unaccompanied oboe "Hotel des Roches noires a Trouville," "Sentier dans les bois," and "Le ballet espagnol." The program concludes with a Brazilian Couplet, "Danzon" and "Afro," accompanied by guest artist Tim Shade on the jazz trombone and euphonium.
In addition to his teaching duties at Westminster, Reynolds coaches the student chamber ensembles and is a member of the Westminster College Faculty Woodwind Quintet. He earned his undergraduate degree from Youngstown State University and his master's from the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Reynolds is the associate director of bands in the Liberty Local Schools, and performs with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, the Greenville Symphony Orchestra, the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra, and the W.D. Packard Band of Warren. He has also performed with the SORG opera and the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Hamilton and Lebanon Orchestras.

Forty-five students have volunteered to form a model United Nations team to compete in scrimmages with other higher education institutions.
Dr. Sandra K. Webster, professor and chair of psychology at Westminster College, will present "Lessons Learned in Korea" Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 11:45 a.m. in 311 Patterson Hall.
Susan Shafer, artist in residence at Westminster College, will perform Sunday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel.
Dr. Helen M. Boylan, assistant professor of chemistry at Westminster College, will present "Microwaves Aren't Just for Cooking" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 11:45 a.m. in Patterson Hall room 311.
"The microwave is a common commercial appliance, and nearly every kitchen in the United States is equipped with one," said Boylan. "What is not common knowledge is the history behind the development of the microwave and how the microwave heats."
Westminster College elementary education students recently sent gifts to four soldiers in Iraq.
Dr. Matthew Sivils, Westminster College assistant professor of English, received the James F. Beard Award for Young Scholars from the James Fenimore Cooper Society.
