Education Students Send Gifts to Military Members in Iraq

Posted on Monday, December 11, 2006

Westminster College elementary education students recently sent gifts to four soldiers in Iraq.

"It was refreshing to see students take care of this service learning project," said Dr. Amy Camardese, Westminster College assistant professor of education. "They worked very hard to collect money from three sites: Mugsie's Coffee House in New Wilmington; the Westminster College information desk in McKelvey Campus Center; and in our Education Department. Every Friday this semester, they contributed a dollar in exchange for dressing down.' A total of $450 was collected to purchase the items sent to the soldiers in Iraq. The four soldiers who will receive the boxes were friends or relatives of the 23 junior block elementary students in this class."

This service project, selected in August, came to an end in late November when the students met to wrap the gifts and sent them off to Iraq.

"I was surprised at how successful the service project turned out to be," said Megan Mancini, a junior elementary major from Pittsburgh. "It was great that we were able to send so many things to the soldiers."
