Dr. Matthew Sivils, Westminster College assistant professor of English, received the James F. Beard Award for Young Scholars from the James Fenimore Cooper Society.
The Society annually honors a young scholar who has recently finished doctoral work and who has excelled in the study of James Fenimore Cooper.
Society president Dr. Lance Schachterle wrote in the award letter: "Your scholarly contributions to Cooper studies have already made a favorable impact, both through your several essays and through your important editorial roles in several major publishing projects, including the new annual, Literature in the Early American Republic."
Sivils has participated in a number of conferences and seminars relating to Cooper's work, and is a member of the Society's board of directors.
Sivils has been with Westminster since 2006. He earned his undergraduate degree at Arkansas Tech University and his master's and Ph.D. at Oklahoma State University.
