Westminster College Broadcast Communications Student Nominated for College Emmy Award

Posted on Tuesday, March 25, 2014

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Joe Ligo `13, a Westminster alumnus who earned a degree in broadcast communications, was recently named one of three finalists for a 2014 Academy of Television Arts and Science College Emmy for Outstanding Documentary. The winner will be announced April 23 during an awards presentation in North Hollywood, Calif.

Ligo has been named finalist for his video "The Unfortunate History of the AMC Pacer." According to Ligo's website, "the movie chronicles the history of America's weirdest car from its inception through its demise. Viewers go on a ride through history, including details on how General Motors and the U.S. government nearly sabotaged the most innovative car of the 1970s.  It's an underdog story of how a plucky little car company left a big mark on the industry (and pop culture)."

"The prestige of the Emmys shines a light on the great talent of our students," said Brad Weaver, Westminster communication studies lecturer. "Joe's documentary is top notch and was first recognized by the BEA Festival of Media Arts.  Now he's an Emmy nominee.  I'm also very touched that he invited me to be a guest at the awards ceremony in Los Angeles."

Ligo is a son of Jesse and Amy Ligo of Mercer and a graduate of Mercer Area High School.  During his time at Westminster he was the program director/operations manager and on-air personality for Westminster's Titan Radio. Currently, he is a videographer and reporter for New Castle News, and he owns his own video production company - Ambassador Films.

The broadcast and digital communications program is one of the largest and fastest growing at Westminster College, offering students interested in radio and television an education with hands on experience, including: remote broadcasts of sports and other special events, in-studio production of news, magazine and interview shows, announcing and managing Titan Radio, special feature productions, and web and internet journalism on www.wcn247.com

The objective of the broadcast and digital communications program is to prepare students for entry-level and subsequent management positions in digital media: radio, television, cable and a range of other organizations.
