Westminster College’s School of Education will host a full day of activities celebrating kindness and the legacy of Fred Rogers on Friday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The event,“Be Kind Day,” commemorates Rogers’ birthday and his enduring message of compassion, curiosity and care for others.
The day will begin with a story time event from 10 to 11 a.m. in McGill Library, designed for preschool-aged children. School of Education students will read stories focused on kindness, lead drawing activities and provide “Be Kind” cookies for participants.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Westminster students can visit the TUB in McKelvey Campus Center during lunchtime to receive free cookies and “Be Kind” wristbands.
At 2 p.m., Ryan Devlin, media production teacher at Fox Chapel Area High School, will introduce a student-produced documentary,“Our Assignment from Fred Rogers.” The screening will take place in the Berlin Lounge of McKelvey Campus Center.
At 4 p.m., Ryan Rydewski will present insights from his book, “When You Wonder, You’re Learning! Mister Rogers’ Enduring Lessons for Raising Creative, Curious, Caring Kids.” The presentation, held in Mueller Theater, will focus on fostering curiosity in children through the principles inspired by Fred Rogers.
The day will conclude at 6 p.m. in Mueller Theater with a presentation and book signing by Todd Cole ’83, Westminster alumnus and School of Education instructor. Cole will discuss his book, “WWFD? What Would Fred Do? A Conversation About Friendship and Being an Advocate for Children.” Attendees can enjoy light snacks and Fred Rogers-themed memorabilia giveaways.
Throughout the day, guests can take photos with a large Daniel Tiger balloon on the campus quad.
“Be Kind Day” events are free and open to the public.
Titan Radio 88.9 FM will also participate in Westminster College’s Be Kind Day. Throughout the day, the station will broadcast short Mister Rogers quotes focused on kindness, empathy and community. Listeners may also submit recorded shout-outs through the station’s free mobile app to thank individuals who have made a positive impact on their lives.
