Westminster College Assistant Professor Awarded Grants and Published in History Journal

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Dr. Michael Bowen, Westminster College assistant professor of history, was awarded two grants allowing the opportunity to do archival research throughout the country. Additionally, his review of a book detailing the history of the Republican Party was published in one of the flagship journals for his field.

Bowen received the Everett Dirksen Congressional Research Award from the Dirksen Center, a non-profit center named after the late senator from Illinois. This award funded two weeks of archival research at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and the AFL-CIO Archives at the National Labor College in Silver Spring, Md.

He was also named a Carl Albert Visiting Scholar by the Carl Albert Congressional Center and Archives at the University of Oklahoma. The award funded one week of research at the Carl Albert Archives. Both trips were to research Bowen's next project, tentatively titled The Watergate Babies and the Transformation of the Democratic Party.

His review of Geoffrey Kabaservice's Rule and Ruin was published in the Journal of American History, Vol. 99, No 2 (Sept 2012).

Bowen, who joined the faculty in 2011, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Florida.  He is the author of The Roots of Modern Conservatism: Dewey, Taft, and the Battle for the Soul of the Republican Party.
