Relay for Life Raised Nearly $25,000

Westminster College's annual Relay for Life raised nearly $25,000 at the May 5 event.
Westminster's Relay is organized each year by the Alpha Nu chapter of national fraternity Alpha Sigma Phi, whose members volunteered over 1,000 hours coordinating a successful walk to benefit the American Cancer Society.
"It's hard to estimate the number of walkers," said senior Miltiadis Constantine, publicity chair. "There were 30 teams and 235 participants registered before the event and a number who arrived and signed up onsite."
When not walking on the track at Burry Stadium, participants could take advantage of other activities, including a dunk tank, soccer goals, cornhole boards, Frisbees, footballs, volleyballs, and free snow-cones provided by Campus Programming Council.
The campus chapter of Colleges Against Cancer operated a "jail." Donors could pay to have someone "arrested" and detainees could not be released until they had raised a matching amount.
Luminaria in honor of survivors or in memory of those lost to cancer ringed the track for the closing ceremony, followed by a release of sky lanterns over Brittain Lake.
"I was very proud of my Alpha Sig brothers for their efforts in making this event even more successful than last year," said senior Cody Donaldson, overall event chair. "I look forward to returning to Relay as an alumnus."
Constantine, a public relations and political science major, is a son of Thomas and Vasiliki Constantine of Poland, Ohio, and a graduate of Poland Seminary High School.
Donaldson, an accounting and financial economics major, is a son of Mark and Jean Donaldson of Sharpsville and a graduate of Sharpsville High School.
Alpha Sigma Phi, founded at Yale University in 1845, established the Westminster chapter in 1939. The fraternity aims to be the co-curricular organization of choice for discerning undergraduate men through the provision of an enriching brotherhood experience and a full range of character and leadership development opportunities.
