Director of Bands Selected as All-State Conductor

Posted on Friday, April 13, 2012

Dr. R. Tad Greig, Westminster College associate professor of music and director of bands, was selected as the 2012 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Wind Ensemble Conductor.

The All-State Wind Ensemble is one of several ensembles that perform for the Pennsylvania All-State Music Conference and includes the finest high school musicians from across the state.  Students earn placement by progressing from district to regional bands to the all-state level.  Once selected, students receive the music, chosen by the guest conductor, for the all-state concert.

"I selected music for the ensemble that provides a glimpse into the history of bands, provides insight into new directions, and music that has interesting additional features," Greig said.  "It is important that the music is appropriate for the talent level of the ensemble but, at the same time, acts as a springboard for intellectual discussion as these students are extremely talented.  It is important that they learn more than notes and rhythms."

The Wind Ensemble concert is part of the PMEA state conference and will be held Saturday, April 21, at 4 p.m. at the Lancaster Conference Center.

"I am honored and humbled to be selected for this," Greig said.  "It will be a wonderful experience to meet so many young musicians and to have the opportunity to rehearse and talk about music."

Greig, who serves as chair of Westminster's Department of Music, has been an active guest conductor and lecturer throughout the eastern United States.  At Westminster, Greig has developed the Titan Marching Band and Symphonic Band and established the Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble.  The Wind Ensemble has twice earned the honor of being a guest performance ensemble, selected through audition, at the PMEA state conference.

Greig, who joined the Westminster faculty in 19995, earned an undergraduate degree from Grove City College, master's degree from Youngstown State University, and Ph.D. from Kent State University.
