Posted on Monday, March 17, 2003

Dr. Kenneth Bailey, international author and lecturer in Middle Eastern New Testament Studies, will deliver the 16th annual Christy Lecture at Westminster College Sunday, March 30,  at 7 p.m. at the Wallace Memorial Chapel.

Bailey will speak on "Road Signs for a Journey with Islam: Dangers, Denials and Challenges in the New Century."

Ordained by the Presbyterian Church (USA), Bailey spent 40 years living and teaching in seminaries and institutes in Egypt, Lebanon, Jerusalem, and Cyprus.  For 20 of those years, he was a professor of New Testament and head of the Biblical Division of the Near East School of Theology in Beirut.  For ten years, Bailey was on the faculty of The Ecumenical Institute for Theological Research in Jerusalem.  Bailey also spent time as Theologian in Residence with the Episcopal Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, and Canon of the Cathedral.

The program also features several numbers by the Westminster College Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Robin Lind, director of choral activities, and organ music will be provided by Dr. Elizabeth Harrison, college organist.  Prayers will be offered by the Rev. Steven Allen, college chaplain, and Keturah Laney, chapel assistant.

The Wayne H. Christy Lecture Series annually honors Dr. Wayne H. Christy, who was a long-time faculty member and chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Westminster College.   The program seeks out men and women who distinguish themselves by relating religion to issues of contemporary life.
