Westminster College School of Music invites high school students to campus on Monday, Oct. 7 and Tuesday, Oct. 8 to participate in Music Major for a Day.
Each day will have a specific area of focus for interested students. Monday, Oct. 6, will concentrate on winds, brass, and percussion. Tuesday, Oct. 7, will highlight strings, voice and keyboard. The events are designed to show what it’s like to be a music major at Westminster.
Participants will have the opportunity to shadow a current student, sit in on classes, meet faculty and play or sing in ensemble rehearsals. Classes such as music theory, music history and instrumental methods will give attendees a glimpse into the classroom atmosphere.
Students will attend rehearsals with band, choir, orchestra, jazz ensembles and chamber groups and personally meet with music faculty. A campus tour highlighting facilities like rehearsal halls and practice rooms will give students the chance to see what is available to them as music majors at Westminster.
“Music Major for a Day is always an exciting event at Westminster. It gives high school students a genuine window into the life of a college music student,” said Dr. Dan Perttu, professor of music, theory and composition. “By sitting in classes, playing alongside our ensembles and connecting with our faculty and students, high school students can picture themselves thriving in this environment. I love seeing the moment when they realize that studying music at the college level isn’t just a dream but an exciting and attainable path.”
Lunch with current Westminster music students will be provided to those attending. The event is free. Registration is required, click here to participate.
