A new economic impact study commissioned by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) estimates Westminster College’s annual contribution to the Pennsylvania economy at $87.7 million and 754 jobs.
The research was conducted by Parker Strategy Group, a nationally recognized research firm specializing in economic impact analysis.
The analysis considered Westminster’s direct spending on operations, employee wages and benefits, and capital projects, as well as the ripple effects in industries that support the College. It also factored in student and visitor spending, along with the broader economic impact of increased household income generated by Westminster-related employment.
According to the study, the College directly and indirectly supports 754 full-time and part-time jobs across the state. This includes direct campus positions and indirect and induced jobs created by supply and equipment vendors and contractors. The figures also include jobs at local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, retail stores, gas stations and healthcare providers that serve Westminster’s students, employees and visitors.
The report also estimates that Westminster College generates approximately $6.8 million in annual tax revenue for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and local governments, including sales, property, personal income and corporate income taxes.
The study was conducted using IMPLAN economic modeling software and follows industry-standard methodologies for assessing the higher education sector’s economic impact.
“There’s no question that Pennsylvania’s independent, nonprofit colleges and universities serve as vital economic drivers for their communities and help fuel the economic vitality of the Commonwealth,” said Nichole Parker, managing principal of Parker Strategy Group.
