Westminster College rising sophomore Evelyn Dickinson and Dr. Helen Boylan, professor of environmental science, led a nature mindfulness session at Buhl Park as part of Shenango Riverwatchers’ Environmental Education Day on May 14.

The event brought nearly 200 fifth-grade students from public and private schools in the Sharon and Farrell areas. Throughout the day, students rotated through a variety of interactive environmental education stations designed to connect them with nature and encourage environmental awareness.

At their station, Dickinson and Boylan introduced the benefits of connecting with nature for the mind, body and heart. They then led a walking mindfulness activity during which students engaged their senses while exploring the natural environment. Each rotation focused on a unique sensory experience, paired with a distinct location in the park and a specific natural element to observe, such as sound, texture or sights in the environment.

“I am very grateful for the Shenango Riverwatchers and their passion for educating and inspiring younger kids to learn more about the areas around them, how they can use nature as a resource, and how they can protect it,” said Dickinson, an environmental science major from New Wilmington.

Dickinson said participating in the event also helped her explore future career options.

“It allowed me to network with people and learn about the various pathways you can take in environmental education,” she said.
