Dr. Robert Thorne, professor of physics at Cornell University, is the Westminster College Woods Lecturer Thursday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall in Hoyt Science Resources Center.

Thorne will speak about "Collisions! From Mass Extinctions to the Assassination of JFK."

Thorne earned his undergraduate degree in engineering from the University of Manitoba and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, where he worked with Nobel laureate John Bardeen.

His research includes a broad range of interests, including the physics of novel one- and two-dimensional electronic materials, problems related to determining the structures of protein molecules and other large biological molecules, developing better ways for freezing sperm cells, and attempting to recover the test from the 2,000 year-old eroded limestone and marble tablets.

The Woods Memorial Lecture honors Dr. Robert M. Woods, professor of physics at Westminster College from 1947-1972.  It is made possible by a gift from the Woods' family that has been supplemented over the years by gifts from friends and alumni.

The event is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact the Westminster College Physics Department at (724) 946-7200.

Westminster College Festival Chorus and Warren Philharmonic Orchestra Present Faure's Requiem

The Westminster College Festival Chorus and Warren Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Faure's Requiem Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

"A vibrant and exuberant Beethoven's 8th Symphony will set the stage for Faure's Requiem, with its lush sonorities and ethereal vision of paradise," said Dr. Robin Lind, director of choral activities at Westminster College.  "This is actually a new choir created for this concert.  We are combining the Westminster Concert Choir, the Women's and Men's Choruses, plus some faculty and alumni, giving about 120 voices to the work."

The concert will also be performed Sunday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. at the Packard Music Hall  in Warren, Ohio, and Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood.

The first two concerts will be performed with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Susan Davenny Wyner, and will include Beethoven's 8th Symphony, as well as Faure's Requiem.  Dr. Anne Bentz, assistant professor of music at Westminster College, will sing the soprano solo in the performances with the orchestra.

The last concert, featuring the Westminster College Concert Choir under the direction of Lind, will be accompanied by Dr. Elizabeth Harrison, Westminster College organist, and will include other selected choral works.

Westminster Preschool Heads Local Drive to Purchase Replacement Books for Hurricane Victims

The Westminster College Preschool teamed with members of the Westminster Psychology Club and Mortar Board to raise funds for books lost during the recent hurricanes.

"Each preschool child and Psychology Club members were each asked to donate 50 cents, which insures the delivery of one book," said Dr. Mandy Medvin, professor and Gibson-Drinko distinguished chair of psychology.  "Mortar Board, as part of its emphasis on literacy, will be donating their funds from Turkey Day to this effort."

All monies collected will be donated to the Hurricane Book Relief Fund.

"We at the Preschool Lab chose this project to help our children understand the value of books, and that lost books can be replaced," Medvin said.  "We are delighted to see this expand into a campus-wide effort."

Donations can be made to the Hurricane Book Relief through the Website http://www.firstbook.org or mailed to First Book, 1319 F Street, Suite 1000, Washington, D.C.  20004-1155.

Contact Medvin at (724) 946-7360 or e-mail medvinm@westminster.edu for more information.
