NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College announces several personal enrichment and leisure courses for community residents.
Seven members of the Westminster College Model United Nations team recently attended a mock meeting at the College of Wooster.
"There were about 36 participants from Westminster, the College of Wooster and Mercyhurst College," said Dr. Andrea Grove, assistant professor of political science and adviser to the group. "The three advisers all attended the same graduate school, Ohio State University, and we have been making efforts to collaborate with their students in events like this."
The topic was a nuclear weapons free zone in the Middle East, and Westminster students represented the people of Brazil, United Kingdom, Costa Rica, Iran, Ukraine, Indonesia and Austria.
"A model UN is a way for students to learn about the United Nations, contemporary international issues, multilateral diplomacy, how to see problems from various perspectives, and how to engage in role playing," Grove said.

Dr. James Hall, professor of mathematics at Westminster College, recently presented a paper, "Differential Equations Enriched by Vector Space Concepts," at the joint meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
"My paper suggests that recent reappearance of the integrated course in differential equations and linear algebra is an occasion for exploring how the two math specialties overlap and reinforce each other," Hall said. "In particular, the algebraic concepts of vector spaces are a framework into which to organize a variety of results from differential equations."
Hall, who has been with Westminster College since 1984, earned his undergraduate degree from Northern Illinois University, his master's from Harvard University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He is also a co-author of "Differential Equations and Linear Algebra" published by Prentice-Hall in 2002.

The Westminster College Wind Ensemble will present a fall concert Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
Dr. R. Tad Greig, director of bands at Westminster College, will conduct the concert with the help of Cyndi Mancini, a senior music education major from McKees Rocks. She was selected through the "Young Conductors Competition," which requires candidates to have completed beginning conduction and instrumental conducting courses before they prepare and conduct multiple musical scores for the competition.
The Wind Ensemble will provide a diverse program of outstanding Wind literature including: Charles Rochester Young's "The Tempered Steel;" Philip Sparke's "Music for a Festival;" Girolamo Frescobaldi's "Toccata;" the "Finale" from Symphony 1 in G Minor by Basil Kalinnikov, and more.
The Wind Ensemble is a select ensemble, chosen through audition, that performs the most challenging in new and established literature.
"The program is quite challenging, both technically and musically," Greig said. "The students must convey styles and sounds related to orchestral playing through the modern harmonies and rhythmic asymmetry present in the more contemporary pieces."
The event is free and open to the public. Contact Greig at (724) 946-7279 or e-mail greigrt@westminster.edu for more information.
