Sandip Burman, an internationally renowned Tabla artist, returns to Westminster College in concert Thursday, March 3, at 7 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
"Sandip's instrument, the tabla, is an indigenous Indian instrument from the percussion family," said Dr. Tad Greig, director of bands at Westminster College. "Sandip has been recognized as one of the most talented on this instrument. He has performed throughout the world and has recorded with many other classical and jazz musicians. He will be joined by his sister."
Burman infuses the sound of his native music with traditional jazz. His performances are marked with spontaneous innovation and tonal purity, even when he is delivering complex rhythmic patterns at dazzling speeds.
Burman has collaborated and toured with Bela Fleck, and is one of the guest artists on the Fleckton's Grammy award-winning album, "Outbound." He has also had the honor of playing with jazz legends Jack DeJohnette, Al DiMeola, Glen Velez, Paul McCandless, Andy Narell, and Victor Wooten.
He has performed in concert at the Getty Museum, the Kennedy Center, Street Scene, First Night Providence, House of Blues Chicago, Nelson Atkins Museum, Wolftrap, Ravinia Festival, Skirball Cultural Center, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Sterngrove Festival.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Greig at (724) 946-7279 or e-mail greigrt@westminster.edu.
