Two public concerts featuring Westminster College’s Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling will take place in the New Wilmington Borough Amphitheater on Monday, June 22, and Friday, June 26.

The public performances will begin with an Instructor's Concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, June 22, featuring Dr. Melinda Perttu, professor of music at Westminster College and director of the Strathgheny School of Scottish Fiddling, and guest fiddle instructor David Gardner of Williamsburg, Va. Dr. Daniel Perttu, professor of music at Westminster, will provide keyboard accompaniment.

The Strathgheny Fiddlers Concert, featuring students of the school, will be held at 8 p.m. Friday, June 26.

The concerts conclude a weeklong Scottish fiddling camp on Westminster’s campus. Participants from across the U.S. study bowing techniques, ornamentation, interpretation and rhythmic nuance, while developing skills in learning by ear and interpreting traditional notation practices.

This year’s camp offered both in-person instruction and an online participation option.

Crawford Perttu is a sanctioned Scottish FIRE judge as well as a U.S. National Scottish Fiddling Champion and author of “A Violinist’s Guide to Scottish Fiddling.” She earned an undergraduate degree from Duquesne University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University.

Gardner, also a sanctioned Scottish FIRE judge, is a professional fiddler and the director of the Williamsburg Strathspey and Reel Society and a Fulbright teacher exchange scholar in music.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

The New Wilmington Borough Amphitheater is located in New Wilmington Borough Park on Beechwood Avenue. In case of inclement weather, performances will be moved to the Berlin Lounge in Westminster College's McKelvey Campus Center.
