Accounting Professor to Discuss Game Strategy at Faculty Forum

David Smith, Westminster College assistant professor of accounting, will discuss the use of games to develop academic skills at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

Smith's presentation, "Games People Play...and Can Use to Develop Accounting Skills," will explore the use of game strategies to achieve the best outcome, while developing motivation to succeed and learning from failure. These strategies include forward planning, as in chess and football; diplomacy, as in Monopoly® and Survivor; and preparation for the unexpected (or "luck"), as in dice or cards.

Smith, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2004, earned an undergraduate degree from Bucknell University, master's in taxation from Robert Morris University, M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
