English Professor to Speak at Bleasby Colloquium

Posted on Wednesday, February 4, 2009

Dr. Richard Sprow, Westminster College professor of English, will present "John Irving: The Artist as Portrait" as the third in the 2008-2009 Bleasby Colloquium Thursday, Feb. 12, at 7 p.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

"My Bleasby presentation focuses on my ongoing research into the contemporary novelist John Irving," Sprow said. "I am particularly interested in Irving's use of the writer as character in many of his novels, and his extensive comments, both in essays and in interviews, about the writing process."

"I am planning to write a book-length study of this topic, and this presentation will give an overview of the project," Sprow added. "In addition, I will present several examples of Irving's own words about writing and the writer/character in his novels."

Sprow, who has been with Westminster since 1976, earned an undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University and a master's and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

This colloquium is part of the George Bleasby Colloquia, a series of literary events in honor of the late Dr. Bleasby, who chaired the Department of English at Westminster from 1954-75.
