Westminster College, in partnership with LIVE New Wilmington, is pleased to announce the return of Doing Our Thing (DOT), a revitalized educational program offering hands-on, creative learning experiences for young children.

The program will take place on three consecutive Saturdays in January—Jan. 17, 24 and 31—on Westminster’s campus from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Each week features two age-specific learning tracks: one for children ages 3 to 5 and another for children ages 6 to 9.

Each DOT session is collaboratively designed and co-led by a Westminster College faculty member and a community partner. Activities center on a unifying theme, incorporate a featured children’s book and engage participants in hands-on, creative learning. Westminster College students, primarily education majors, will support the sessions, working directly with the participants.

January Session Schedule

Saturday, Jan. 17
• Dance Your Way Through Your Big Feelings (ages 3 to 5)
• Concoctions (ages 6 to 9)

Saturday, Jan. 24
• Monster Mayhem (ages 3 to 5)
• Forensic Science Fun (ages 6 to 9)

Saturday, Jan. 31
• Storybook Magic (ages 3 to 5)
• Mix, Make, Shape! (ages 6 to 9)

Doing Our Thing was founded in 1974 to create unique educational experiences for elementary-aged students that didn’t involve traditional classroom elements like textbooks or tests. Instead, DOT focused on creative courses to keep students engaged while they learn. The program continued to grow throughout the 1990s, with over 200 children registering for events each year.

“Today, the new DOT continues this tradition by offering area children exciting, themed activities led by Westminster College faculty and local experts,” said Diana Reed, DOT community organizer. “The revived DOT stays true to its original mission of enriching the lives of children through learning and community engagement.”

Registration is now open. Each session costs $8, and scholarships are available for families with financial need.
