About DOT

Doing Our Thing (DOT), inspired by the well-loved program from the past, is a hands-on Saturday program for children in and around the New Wilmington area, designed to spark creativity, curiosity, and connection. Each session features engaging themed activities tied to children's literature, led by Westminster College faculty and community members, in collaboration with Westminster College students.

DOT is a collaboration between Westminster College and LIVE New Wilmington.

The sessions will be held in January 2026 and cost $8.00 per child.

Session Descriptions

Led by Dr. Jessica Rhodes and Mrs. Gina Sharbaugh

In this session, children will have an opportunity to explore their big feelings through a read aloud, creative improvisation and playful dancing.

Led by Dr. Craig Caylor and Dr. Jessica Sarver

A concoction is a mixture of various ingredients or elements. In this session, participants will create a series of their OWN concoctions and learn about the science behind the behaviors of each. From the chemistry lab to the kitchen counter, concoctions are a part of life!

Led by Prof. Summer Zickefoose and Mrs. Jill Postema

In this session, the book, “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me,” by Maya Angelou will be featured. Children will be able to respond to the book with drawing and craft materials.

Led by Dr. Deanne Buffalari and Mr. Christopher Cassano

From dusting for fingerprints to peering through microscopes, children will learn the same techniques used by real-world investigators to collect clues and solve mysteries. Whether a seasoned sleuth or a first-time gumshoe, there’s something for every budding detective. Join the adventure—and see if you can solve the mystery of the missing carrot cake!

Led by Mr. Todd Cole and Mrs. Sue Ellen Patton

Look, listen and learn through literature. Take a trip with us through a SNOWGLOBE at the end of January!

Led by Prof. Brian Petrus and Mrs. Maggie Noble

Participants will explore where ingredients come from, learn how they fuel our bodies, and make their own no-bake energy bites (a.k.a. edible playdough). The session blends discussion, storytime, and hands-on fun to connect healthy eating with creativity.

History of DOT

Doing Our Thing was founded in 1974 by former Westminster College Professor of Education, Dr. Clara Cockerille, alongside women from four New Wilmington community organizations. The founders wanted to create unique educational experiences for elementary-aged students that didn’t involve traditional classroom elements like textbooks or tests. Instead, they focused on creative courses to keep students engaged while they learn. The program continued to grow throughout the 90s, with over 200 children registering for events each year. We are excited to refresh the program and continue using Dr. Cockerille’s teaching philosophies to make interesting, hands-on classes that appeal to young learners.
