Westminster College recently received a $300,000 grant toward the $3 million renovation of Old Main from the Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh.
"We are deeply grateful to the Richard King Mellon Foundation for its support of the Project for Old Main," said Westminster College President R. Thomas Williamson. "Old Main is our signature academic and administrative facility, and has had only minor renovations since it was built in 1929. Project infrastructure improvements include upgrading the building's electrical and heating systems and installing a sprinkler system, elevator, additional restrooms, and air conditioning. We are also enhancing classrooms and academic program areas, refurbishing the Chapel, and restoring the bell tower masonry. Together, these improvements will result in an up-to-date, comfortable, and fully accessible building that will meet the present and future needs of our students while retaining its distinctive historic character."
The renovation of Old Main began last summer and the entire project will be completed by early September.
The Project for Old Main is the sixth of seven construction and renovation projects included in Westminster College's $30 million Shared Vision, Uncommon Results fundraising initiative. The five projects completed since 1998 total nearly $23 million and include the Western Pennsylvania Cultural Arts Center ($1.7 million), Marjorie A. Walker Recreation Center ($285,000), Andrew J. McKelvey Campus Center ($14.4 million), Thompson-Clark Hall ($3 million), and the Memorial Field House ($3.4 million).
"Blast," a celebration of movement and music, will play at Westminster College, Friday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.
"Blast is filled with color, spectacle, youthful energy, and the sound of great brass and percussion playing," said Gene DeCaprio, director of the Westminster College Celebrity Series. "And visually, the show is stunning."
Blast consists of 35 members, drawn from the world of outdoor pageantry all across North America. There are over 40 world titles held by Blast cast members who comprise three performing sections, the brass, percussion, and visual ensembles. The brass instruments are pitching in the standard multi-keys. The percussions section includes drums, mallet instruments, and electronic keyboards. The visual element enhances the show by spinning and tossing unusual implements along with the traditional sabers and colorful flags in perfectly synchronized, ballet-like drill.
Blast has left critics everywhere surprised and delighted. Howard Kissel of the "New York Daily News" says "What a cast, what a blast, an exhilarating evening." Bruce McCabe of "The Boston Globe" says, "Blast doesn't falter while bridging the categories of classical, blues, jazz, rock 'n roll, and techno-pop music. It sent the full house into repeated bursts of cheering and applause with the thrill of seeing sheer virtuosity in a different kind of art form."
Westminster's Orr Auditorium has been recently remodeled to include air conditioning, stage elevator, new carpeting, and re-upholstered seats, along with stage lighting and shell improvements.
