Westminster College Presents an Operetta Review; Dean of College to Sing with Students

Fifteen Westminster College students will present an operetta review,"œWhen the Lights Go Down,"? Saturday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

"Å“The production consists of scenes and beloved melodies from The Merry Widow to The Tales of Hoffmann and beyond,"? said Dr. Anne Bentz, assistant professor of music and coordinator of this event at Westminster College.  "Å“Students perform multiple roles and the production is full of dance.  It promises to be a night full of humor and energy for all."?

Dr. Jesse Mann, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, and Dr. Frederick Horn, professor of English emeritus and director of the Off-Campus Program at Westminster, will also be performing in this event.  In one number, they will perform a duet about corrupt deans.

"Å“I never sang opera before last year,"? Mann said.  "Å“For fun, I took some voice while I was in college, and I"â„¢ve been singing a long time in productions like "Å“Anything Goes."?  I was asked to fill in for a student because tenors are rare here, but now I"â„¢m singing several duets with students.  It"â„¢s fun and a good way to get to know students."?

"Å“I"â„¢ve been singing since I was six-years-old and took voice for many years, but I"â„¢ve never sang opera before except in a 'Robin Hood"â„¢ chorus at Chautauqua,"? Horn said.  "Å“I was asked to join last year, but I couldn"â„¢t so I was drafted this year.  It"â„¢s a challenge "" singing and acting at the same time."?

Mihai Vilcu, an adjunct music faculty member from Romania who has conducted operas in Romania and Germany and has conducted orchestras in Russia, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and Luxemburg, will conduct this opera at Westminster.  He was recently chosen as Romania"â„¢s "Å“Artist of the Year."?

Marie Libal-Smith, adjunct music faculty member, will accompany the production on the piano.  Libal-Smith has also served on the faculty of the University of Alabama and at the Depauw University School of Music.  She is currently collaborative pianist at Carnegie Mellon Universit and Duquesne University.

William Turney, Orr stage manager, will manage the lighting for the production.

The event is free and open to the public.  For complimentary tickets or more information, call Bentz at (724) 946-6045 or e-mail bentzah@westminster.edu.

Capelle Meisters Organ Concert Series Continues at Westminster

The Capelle Meisters Classical Organ Concert Series continues at Westminster College with Dr. Dana Robinson Friday, Feb. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in Orr Auditorium.

Robinson, professor of organ and university organist at the University of Illinois at Champaign/Urbana, will play the works of Bach, Reubke, Franck and others.

"Dr. Robinson is one of the best young performers in the United States and Europe," said Dr. Elizabeth Harrison, assistant professor of music and college organist at Westminster College.  "He is playing "The Sonata on the 94th Psalm" by Julius Reubke, which is rarely played because of its difficulty."

In addition to teaching at the University of Illinois School of Music, Robinson has taught at youth organ camps sponsored by the American Guild of Organist.  While at Westminster, he will teach a master's class, "Turning Technique into Music," to Westminster students.

Westminster College recently received a $1,851 grant from the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance for partial support of Capelle Meisters, a classical organ concert series being offered by the Department of Music through the new Western Pennsylvania Cultural Arts Center.

"The title of our series, Capelle Meisters, is taken from music history. The word "Capelle" means chapel and the word "Meisters" means masters. Historically Capellemeisters were the musicians who composed and performed for weekly and sometimes daily worship services and during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and were considered the most outstanding musicians," Harrison said.

"Following that tradition, our Capelle Meisters brings some of our country's best musicians to our campus to perform a wide variety of church music using the organ in our chapel. We feel incredibly privileged to have received this grant and to offer this series to Westminster and to the surrounding community!"

This project is supported in part by the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts, the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania's General Assembly and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal agency. PPA is administered in this region by the Pennsylvania Rural Arts Alliance.

The concert is free and open to the public, but a free-will offering will be collected.  For more information, contact Harrison at (724) 946-7024 or e-mail harrisea@westminster.edu.
