Coming Home to Westminster College

Posted on Monday, October 1, 2001

Homecoming and Reunion Weekend is scheduled at Westminster College, Friday-Sunday, Oct. 12-14.

The weekend kicks off at 1 p.m. Friday when the Golden Tower Society welcomes back the class of 1951 in Ferguson Lounge. At 3 p.m. Alumni can take advantage of a campus tour to return to familiar sites, as well as to see new construction and renovations.

Friday also offers current students an opportunity to have lunch with and meet three distinguished alumni: Stephen R. Gittings '79, a science coordinator at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration; David R. King '91, a vice president and chief technology officer at infiNET Solutions; and Peter M. Andino '77, vice president, Global Sales Operations at IBM Printing Systems. These departmental lunches give students a chance to get insights into the fields that are available to their major.

Friday also marks the sixth annual Student Government Association Powder Puff Football Game and Picnic, which begins at 3 p.m. in the Quad for all current Westminster students.

The annual Citation Celebration Dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. in Russell Dining Room. The Westminster College Alumni Citation recognizes alumni who have achieved significant accomplishments in his or her profession. This celebration includes recognition of four Westminster College alumni: James W. Canan '51, Matthew T. Mangino '85, Joanne Stone Morrissey '69, and Paul D. Trokhan '68.

Canan, a journalism major, has worked for Gannett's Washington bureau, McGraw-Hill World News, Business Weekend, The Air Force Association, and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He has won national writing awards from the American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, Aviation & Space Writers Association, National Association of Science Writers, and an international award from the British Royal Aeronautical Society.

Morrissey, an education major, has dual career interests: teaching and industry. She has taught elementary, secondary, and junior college in Europe and the United States, and is currently an adjunct professor at Kean University. Morrissey held various management positions in the insurance industry before founding The Firemark Group, where she serves as Chief Operating Officer. Recently she created The Vita Fund, which benefits the families of the World Trade Center/Airline Disasters.

Trokhan, a chemistry major, enjoys a creative career as the Upstream Development Engineer in the Tissue/Towel Global Business of Procter and Gamble. His inventions hold 133 US patents plus an approximate 30 pending. His work focuses on the creation of novel and cost effective structures and processes for the manufacture of tissue products.

Mangino, a political science major, is the first recipient of the "Outstanding Young Alumni Award." He currently serves as the district attorney for Lawrence County and previously he served as solicitor of Lawrence County. In 1998, Governor Ridge appointed Mangino to the Board of Trustees of Western Youth Development Centers. He participated in the White House Conference on School Safety: Cause and Prevention of Youth Violence, and has been published in various legal periodicals and newspapers, as well as appearing as a frequent guest on area television news programs.

Saturday's activities begins at 8 a.m. at the hospitality tents on the Senior Terrace, where alumni can connect with friends, enjoy refreshments, purchase and pick-up football and picnic tickets, and sign the Decade Boards.

The Golden Tower Society again welcomes the class of 1951 and all earlier years in Ferguson Lounge at 8 a.m., where a continental breakfast will be served.

At 8:30 a.m. Breakfast with the Books at McGill Library welcomes James R. Heinrich '76 as he delivers "Reading: Use It or Lose It." This event has limited seating, so reservations are required.

At 10 a.m. the Homecoming Parade begins with a theme of "A World of Possibilities" that will be judged by the class of 1951. Approximately 11 floats will portray possible careers for Westminster students.

Saturday morning also offers the opportunity for an open house tour of the new digital equipment at WWNW-FM radio, or another campus tour. Lunch for the 1951 and earlier crowd will be with the Golden Tower Society in Russell, and the All-Alumni Picnic in the Anderson Amphitheater welcomes all alumni at 11:30 a.m.

Then it's football time. The Titans kick off at 1:30 p.m. versus the Thiel Tomcats at Memorial Field.

Saturday evening can be spent at various cluster reunion dinners in the area.

Alumni weekend culminates with a worship service at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. All alumni are invited to rehearse with the choir at 9:30 a.m.
