Westminster History Professor Presents Papers

Dr. Russell Martin, associate professor of history at Westminster College, recently presented papers in Boston at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS).

"'Tsarevna Ovdotia and Her Sister Domna Saburovna: Matrimonial Spectacle and the Integration of Royal In-Laws into the Ruling Circle (1571)' is an analysis of a little known late medieval source for the wedding of Ivan the Terrible's son, Ivan Ivanovich, to Ovdotia Saburovna," Martin said.  "It explored how royal in-laws were introduced into the inner circle of power and privilege in the Kremlin via the rituals of marriage.  My other paper The Current State of the Study of Death and Commemoration' was in a roundtable where I and other presenters discussed the state of the study of various topics in the history of Russian Orthodoxy."

While at the meeting, Martin was elected to a three-year term on the book award committee of the Early Slavic Studies Association (ESSA).

"The ESSA is a group of scholars doing work in all Slavic areas and in various disciplines such as history, literary studies, archeology, and linguistics," Martin said.  "I have been a member since its beginnings nearly 10 years ago."

Martin's article, "Choreographing the Tsar's Happy Occasion': Tradition, Change, and Dynastic Legitimacy in the Weddings of Tsar Mikhail Romanov" appeared in the winter 2004 issue of Slavic Review.  His entry "The Romanovs" was included in the three-volume Encyclopedia of Holy People.

"'The Romanovs' discussed the last tsar, Nicholas II, his wife Alexandra, and their children, as well as other Romanovs who have been canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as martyrs," Martin said.

Martin appeared on A&E Biography in a broadcast on Ivan the Terrible as an expert on the controversial ruler, and has been an expert witness in a Canadian civil trial about the Russian royal family.  He is the co-founder of the Muscovite Biographical Database, a Russian-American computerized register based in Moscow of early modern Russian notables.  The Neville Island, Pa., native is not only fluent in Russian, but also reads Old Church Slavonic/Russian, French, German, Latin, and Polish.

Martin, who has been with Westminster College since 1996, earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and his master's and Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Westminster Chemistry Professor to Discuss Collaborative Research

Dr. Helen Boylan, an assistant professor of chemistry at Westminster College, will present "Catalyzing Research through Collaboration: Exploring Enzymes at Carnegie Mellon University" at Faculty Forum Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 11:45 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater located in the McKelvey Campus Center.

"My forum will discuss a research collaboration I have established with Dr. Gordon Rule at Carnegie Mellon University, where I have spent the past two summers as a visiting scientist in Dr. Rule's lab," Boylan said.  "I will explain how the collaboration was established and also present some of the research results.  We have been investigating how a particular detoxification enzyme, glutathione transferase, recognizes and binds to several substrate molecules.  This enzyme plays a role in Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and cancer treatment."

Boylan's presentation is part of the weekly Faculty Forum.  Established in 1990, Faculty Forum serves as a venue for the exchange of ideas and information among Westminster College faculty.  Speakers present their research, teaching ideas, lectures, performances, special programs, and uses of technology to keep faculty informed about the work of colleagues from many disciplines.

Boylan, who has been with Westminster College since 2001, earned her undergraduate degree from Westminster College, and her Ph.D. from Duquesne University.

Contact Boylan at (724) 946-6293 or e-mail boylanhm@westminster.edu for more information.

Westminster Offers Youth Foundation Theater Camp

Westminster College is offering a "Foundation Theater Camp" for students ages 12-18 June 26-30 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. with a special performance Friday, June 30, at 8 p.m. in Beeghly Theater.

"The goal of the camp is to enhance the knowledge of theatrical performance in our area's youth," said Robert Patrick Allen, camp director.  "Each day will include a series of short lectures, improvisations, character-building exercises, and rehearsals of short scenes, which will culminate in a performance to friends, family, and the general public at the end of the week."

"We will also focus on teaching the students relaxation and some basic vocal techniques," Allen said.  "This year we will also be including a minor focus on musical theater singing.  This portion will be headed up by my assistant, Justin Bryan, who is a 2005 Westminster graduate in theater."

Allen, who graduated from Westminster College in 2005, is currently a second-year master's student at The New School for Drama in New York City.  He is studying under Ron Leibman, who played Rachel's father on Friends.

"We hope to provide the participants with a solid base of theater performance learning through practical application," Allen said.  "The camp is designed to be an asset to a first-time student or a seasoned performer."

The cost of the camp is $100, which includes a breakfast snack and lunch.  Contact Allen at robertpatrickallen@yahoo.com for more information.
