Dr. Arlie Russelll Hochschild, professor emerita of sociology from UC- Berkeley and one of the most respected sociologists working today, will speak about her most recent book, Strangers in Their Own Land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right, on Thursday, April 5 at 7 p.m. in the Wallace Memorial Chapel at Westminster College. The event is free and open to the public, and there will be a book signing following the lecture.

This year's conference was held in Nov. 15-18 in Philadelphia, PA.

Last semester, assistant professor of sociology Dr. Jamie Chapman was named a 2017 Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Teaching and Learning Workshop Fellow. AKD is an international sociology honor society whose purpose is to promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, as well as other social and intellectual activities that will lead to improvement of the human condition.

Seven Westminster College Criminal Justice Studies, International Studies and Sociology majors were inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honorary Society, on April 19, 2017. The initiated students were Rebecca Buckham, Gabriella Fabish, Coty Gander, Kelly Klaas, Caitlynn Kreider, Brittany Mavrich and Maximalian Ungerman. Charissa Mikoski is the current President and Treasurer of AKD. To be eligible for membership the students demonstrated high academic performance in both their major and general college coursework.

Westminster College students participating in the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program course at Trumbull Correctional Institution (TCI) had the opportunity to present program proposals to Mr. Todd Ishee, regional director of prisons in Northeast Ohio, Ms. Charmaine Bracy, warden of Trumbull Correctional Institution, and other Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction (ODRC) officials on April 11, 2017. Students proposed an arts program that would occur within the prison, an 8 week reentry course featuring job and interview skills, and a pilot work release program.

Senior Sociology major and Religion minor Charissa Mikoski presented her capstone research at the Northeast Ohio Undergraduate Sociology Symposium (NEOUSS) at the College of Wooster on April 8, 2017. Seventy-five undergraduates from over twenty-five colleges and universities presented their work in paper presentations and a research poster session.
