Westminster Education Majors Donate 300 Books to Area Schools and Charities

Posted on Monday, December 8, 2003

Twenty-eight Westminster education majors donated 300 books on Dec 8 to those in need.

Dr. Eileen Morelli, associate professor of education at Westminster College, wanted to make sure the bonus books received from students' personal orders from the Scholastic Book Club would find their way into the hands of children who may not always have access to a large, developed library, so she asked for help from her Language Arts and Children's Literature class.

Dr. William Evans, associate professor of education at Westminster College, suggested that Notre Dame School in Sharon, Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, and several area families were in need of quality children's literature.

Three students, Jennifer Allebach, Rebecca Lane, and Laurajane LaVerde, all junior education majors, volunteered to be the coordinators of the book orders and collect the money. For the past several weeks, all 28 members of Westminster's Junior Education Block worked to sort and box orders, and today they delivered hundreds of books.

"I'm very impressed with the generosity and hard work that these Westminster education students have displayed," Morelli said. "We all look forward to this project being the beginning of a tradition in December and May of each year. It's a way to partner with schools to provide quality books to young students."
