Posted on Friday, August 17, 2012

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Two Westminster College students attended the Theta Chi 156th Anniversary Convention and School of Fraternity Practices July 4-8 in Palm Springs, Calif., where they accepted the Howard R. Alter Jr. Award for Chapter Excellence.

Nicholas Dalessio, chapter president, is a senior political science major, a son of David and Tammy Dalessio of Smicksburg and a graduate of Marion Center Area High School. Derek Pollice, recruitment chair, is a sophomore psychology major, a son of Anthony and Lisa Pollice of Cheswick and a graduate of Springdale High School.

They represented Westminster's Zeta Lambda Chapter at the convention and accepted the award on the College's behalf.  This is the second consecutive year the chapter has received the award, which is the highest honor a chapter can receive.

"Being recognized as one of the top chapters in the nation is something my brothers and I take great pride in," Dalessio said. "It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to the fraternity to excel in the multiple areas the Alter Award covers, and it is rewarding to see my brothers recognized for all of their efforts."

According to the Theta Chi website, "The Alter Award is presented annually to those chapters that demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, recruitment, new member and member education, community service and philanthropy, alumni programming, chapter financial management, the Ritual, chapter operations, internal cooperation, campus involvement, risk management practices, and social programming. In short, these chapters demonstrate an ability to consistently exceed expectations in all areas."

Theta Chi Fraternity was founded in 1856 at Norwich University in Vermont.  Since then, it has grown to become one of the largest fraternities with over 147, 000 initiates since its founding.  Initiated at Westminster in 1966, the Zeta Lambda Chapter of Theta Chi prides itself on involvement on campus and in community by lending 'the helping hand.'  Since its founding, the fraternity has promoted knowledge, the advancement of culture and the building of character, while inspiring true friendship both inside and outside its brotherhood.
