Computer Science Professor to Share Robotics Research at Faires Faculty Forum

Dr. David Shaffer, Westminster College associate professor of computer science, will present "Student Research in Machine Learning and Robotics" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Feb. 29, at 11:40 a.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center's Sebastian Mueller Theater.
Shaffer has worked with students the last six years to study biologically-motivated computer algorithms for enabling robots to learn to be more effective in their environments. The work focuses on self-organization of groups of robots through application of the Genetic Algorithm. Shaffer will discuss students' results and plans for future experiments.
Shaffer, who has been with Westminster since 2000, earned an undergraduate degree from Stevens Institute of Technology and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
