The Westminster College Symphony Orchestra will present its annual spring concert, “Romanze,” on Friday, May 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Will W. Orr Auditorium.

Under the direction of Dr. Melinda H. Crawford Perttu, professor of music at Westminster, the orchestra will perform a wide-ranging program featuring classical masterworks, romantic repertoire and traditional and contemporary folk-inspired selections.

The concert will open with Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21 by Ludwig van Beethoven, followed by Romanze in C, Op. 42 by Jean Sibelius.

The program will also include a set of traditional and contemporary works rooted in Scottish and Shetland traditions, including Hillswick Set, Da Slockit Light, Trip to Pakistan, The Balkan Hills, Loch Ness and Tam Lin. These selections will feature Ceòl na Teud, Westminster’s traditional Scottish string music ensemble.

Cellist Blaise Steele, a first-year music education and instrumental music performance double major from Renfrew, Pa., will perform in select folk arrangements. Soprano Minnie Dischert, a senior psychology and music double major from Hermitage, Pa., will present “In Quelle Trine Morbide” from Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini. Trombonist Benjamin Burke, a senior music education and instrumental music performance double major from Crafton, Pa., will be featured in the Trombone Concerto by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, orchestrated by E. Leloir.

The concert will conclude with the Overture from Des Teufels Lustschloss, D. 84 by Franz Schubert.
