Dr. Jeffrey Boerner, Westminster College assistant professor of mathematics, will present "The Mathematical Study of Shape: An Introduction to Topology" at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, Nov. 30, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.
Topology is sometimes described as geometry with rubber sheets, where two shapes are considered to be the same if one can be deformed into the other. Boerner will relate these ideas of shape to his current research on skein modules.
Boerner, who joined the faculty in 2010, earned an undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College and master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.
Contact Boerner at (724) 946-6023 or email for additional information.
Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning. Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
