Westminster College's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hosted a Summer Experiences colloquium Sept. 20.
The colloquium, directed by Dr. Barbara Faires, professor of mathematics, provided an opportunity for students to share their professionally-related summer experiences in business, industry, research, and teaching with fellow students and with faculty.
Student presenters were:
Bryan Bischof, a senior mathematics major, is a son of Steve Salvatora of Gibsonia and Diana Salvatora of New Kensington and a graduate of Valley High School. He participated in the Kansas State University Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), where he worked on a project in knot theory, took two courses, and received flight lessons.
Daniel Orrison, a senior business administration major with a minor in information systems, is a son of William and Rachel Orrison of Washington and is a graduate of Trinity High School. He worked at the Applied Physics Laboratory, a division of Johns Hopkins University.
Nicole Panza, a senior mathematics major with a dual minor in secondary education and computer science, is a daughter of Nancy Panza of Glenshaw and Louis Panza of Eighty Four and a graduate of Shaler High School. She worked as an academic counselor for the Bright Futures Academic Corporation with Campbell (Ohio) High School and Westminster College.
Andrew Polack, a senior computer science and mathematics major, is a son of Samuel and Barbara Polack of Abingdon, Md., and a graduate of Edgewood High School. He worked for Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) under the Guardian program. He developed incident management system (IMS) deployments for use in Federal fire departments and provided a solution to IMS updating.
Stephen Rossi, a sophomore computer information systems major with a minor in mathematics, is a son of Eugene and Eileen Rossi of Oakmont and a graduate of Central Catholic High School. He designed and built Web sites and worked as Web master for several other sites for local high schools and companies.
Anna Sparacino, a senior mathematics major with a minor in secondary education, is a daughter of Christopher and Sharon Sparacino of Verona and a graduate of Saint Joseph High School. She participated in the University of Akron Research Experience for Undergraduates, where she worked on a mathematical model of the evolution of the ABO blood group system.
Randy Sylvester, a senior mathematics major, is a son of Joseph and Merry Beth Sylvester of Beaver Falls and a graduate of Blackhawk High School. He worked at Caputo Insurance Agency in the commercial insurance division, where he learned about software and how to prepare presentations for clients.
