The Westminster College campus has been bustling with activity this summer as physical plant crews and contractors complete a variety of projects to enhance academic, athletic and residential facilities before students return for the start of the fall semester.
Representing nearly $2.6 million in campus investments funded by gifts and grants, this summer’s projects continue Westminster’s long-term commitment to maintaining and improving the College’s learning, living and recreational spaces.
“Every improvement we make is an investment in our students’ experience,” said Westminster College President Dr. Kathy Brittain Richardson. “Whether it’s enhancing athletic facilities, modernizing classrooms or maintaining the infrastructure that supports daily campus life, these projects help ensure Westminster remains a place where students can thrive.”
The most visible addition this summer will be the construction of a new press box overlooking the UPMC Sports Complex’s soccer and lacrosse field. The structure will provide an elevated vantage point for game operations, media coverage and livestream broadcasts while enhancing the experience for fans and event staff.
Phase II of a multi-stage roof replacement project is underway at Memorial Field House. The work includes new roofing over the intramural gymnasium and Westminster Natatorium, along with masonry repairs to the natatorium. Together, the projects represent an investment of more than $1.4 million.
Additional athletic improvements include renovations to the swimming locker rooms with new flooring, ceilings, lighting and paint, resurfacing of the softball field, and replacement of carpeting in the athletics office suite.
Several projects are also improving campus residence halls. New hot water pumps are being installed in Eichenauer and Galbreath halls, while plumbing repairs and flooring replacement are underway in Jeffers Hall.
Academic and campus facilities are also receiving upgrades this summer. One of the College’s most heavily used venues, Orr Auditorium, is scheduled to receive a new roof this fall. The auditorium is home to Westminster’s Celebrity Series, instrumental and vocal concerts, convocations, lectures and numerous public and campus events. In Patterson Hall, classrooms are being equipped with upgraded projectors and speakers to enhance teaching and learning.
Planning also continues for the next phase of renovations to Hoyt Science Center. Current work includes architectural planning for a new exercise science laboratory and the future relocation of the art department, as well as evaluation of the building’s main elevator replacement. In addition, a new storage shed and fencing have been installed to support the campus greenhouse activities.
Many of the projects will be completed before students return for the fall semester, while several larger initiatives, including the Orr Auditorium roof replacement and planning for future renovations to Hoyt Science Center, will continue into the academic year.
