Speaker to Discuss Research on Inner City Youth Risk Factors

Dr. Rolf Loeber, professor of psychiatry at the Pittsburgh School of Medicine, will speak about his research on inner city youth risk factors Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 4:30 p.m. in Phillips Lecture Hall located in the Hoyt Science Resources Center of Westminster College.

Loeber's presentation, "New Findings on the Causes of Violence and Homicide," will review the 15-year study conducted with his wife, Magda Stouthamer-Loeber.  The study tracks more than 1,500 inner city boys to examine risk factors influencing the development of antisocial and delinquent behavior from childhood to early adulthood.  The couple began "The Pittsburgh Girls Study" in 1999, and is currently tracking more than 2,400 girls to examine delinquency, depression, and substance abuse over time.  Loeber and his wife co-founded and co-direct the Pitt Department of Psychiatry's Life History Studies Program.

He also holds appointments in the Department of Epidemiology in the Graduate School of Public Health.  Loeber received the 2003 Distinguished Contribution Award by the American Psychological Association and was recognized as a Fellow by the American Society of Criminology from the University of Cambridge.  He earned his Ph.D. from Queen's University in Ontario Canada.

Westminster Senior Biology Major Presents Research

Nanette Tomicek, a Westminster College senior biology major, recently presented "The Effect of Amphotericin B on Gill Membranes" to the eighth annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences held at the University of Maryland.

"I tried to determine if amphotericin B increases water influx across gill membranes," Tomicek said.  "I'm using gill membranes because they specifically act to restrict water movement to maintain hyperosmotic conditions inside the fish.  In biology, amphotericin B is primarily used as a fungicidal antibiotic, and my data indicates that amphotericin can also act on vertebrate cells to produce detrimental effects."

"This is a significant regional conference highlighting undergraduate science research and represents a good way for students to share their work with others in a professional and comfortable environment," said Dr. John Robertson, assistant professor of biology and supervisor of Tomicek's honors project.

Tomicek is a daughter of Donald and Stephanie Tomicek, North Apollo.  She is vice president of the biology honor society Tri Beta, secretary for the Phi Mu sorority, and public relations chair of Mortar Board, a senior leadership honor society.  In addition to being a member of S.A.D.D. and Fresh Start, Tomicek is a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, a junior leadership honor society.

Contact Robertson at (724) 946-7044 or e-mail robertjc@westminster.edu for more information.
