Westminster College to Host Fifth Film in French Film Festival Series

Une Vie de chat (A Cat in Paris)

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Westminster College's Departments of Modern Languages and English, in conjunction with the Jake Erhardt International Film Series, will show the film Une Vie de chat (A Cat in Paris) Tuesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Mueller Theater of  the McKelvey Campus Center. Westminster Music Major to Perform Vocal Recital

Benjamin Abel, a senior music major from Pittsburgh, will give a recital Friday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel.

The program will include music from Mozart, Handel, Robert Schumann, Vaughan Williams, and more.  Accompanying Abel: on the piano is Jeff Wachter, adjunct faculty member at Westminster; on the trumpet is Cyndi Mancini, a sophomore music education major from McKees Rocks; and singing a duet is Darci Kuhlber, a senior music education major from Grove City.

While at Westminster College, Abel has performed the lead role of Bobby in the production of Crazy for You, a supporting role in Detective Story, and various other roles in the Music Department's opera workshops.

Abel is a son of Steven and Barbara Abel, Pittsburgh, and a graduate of Norwin High School.

Westminster College Announces Martin Luther King Celebration Schedule; Former Steeler J.T. Thomas to Speak Jan

Westminster College will celebrate the birthday of Martin Luther King with various activities Jan. 18-23.

 Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. birthday cake will be served in the Orchard Street Café.
 
 Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 11:40 a.m. there is an hour of prayer in Wallace Memorial Chapel.

 Thursday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. the Westminster College Gospel Choir will present a concert in Wallace Memorial ChapelSodexho Dining Service will provide an International Day Menu which includes: Canja Soup from Brazil; Colcannon Soup from Ireland; Ghanaian, a salad from South Africa; T'ibs We't, a fried beef stew and Yesinde Injera, a bread from Ethiopia; Bubble and Squeak from England; Frango ao Catupiry from Brazil; Schnitz und Knepp from Germany; and Beans Thoren from India.

 Friday, Jan. 21, at 11:40 a.m. in Wallace Memorial Chapel Westminster will welcome speaker Ken Seamans, the current Wilmington Township Supervisor, one time Mercer County Commissioner, and former member of Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.  Seamans was a policeman in the nation's capital during the 60s and 70s and a member of the first integrated police team in 1964.  He also served on several security details to protect King.  Seamans will discuss his police experience and the times he met Dr. King.

 Monday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. J.T. Thomas, the first African-American football player at Florida State University, will speak in Wallace Memorial Chapel.  Originally from Macon, Ga., Thomas excelled in football, basketball, and track at Lanier Central High Military School.  In 1969, he accepted a full scholarship at Florida State, where he majored in business.  After graduation he became the number one draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he was a member of the "Steel Curtain" defense, which won four Super Bowls during the 70s.

 During his football career, he also worked as a sales representative and broker for Lincoln National Life, Prudential and Research Underwriter Property and Casualty Company.  From 1976-78, Thomas was employed by the U.S. Department of Commerce in a program co-sponsored by the NFL to align college students with major corporations in the private sector for employment while in college and permanent employment upon graduation.

 After his retirement from football, he opened Chin's Rice Bowl, an oriental-themed restaurant, and became a Burger King and then Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar franchisee.  He is currently president of Three Rivers Barbeque, LLC, d/b/a Red Hot & Blue a Southern Grill & Bar restaurant.

 Thomas is a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh, where he served for 12 years as an organist and pianist for the Young Adult Choir.  He is also a Board member of Christian Life Skills Inc. (mentoring program), the Afro-American Music Institute, Coalition for Christian Outreach, and coordinator of the Boyz to Men Mentoring Ministry at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Westminster College to Celebrate Fall Family Day

 Westminster College will celebrate Fall Family Day Saturday, Oct. 29.

This Westminster tradition has gathered thousands of family members to Westminster College to celebrate and enjoy the special activities.

"My wife, Jean, and I have enjoyed the opportunity to meet the moms, dads, grandparents and siblings of some of the finest young people on earth," said Westminster College President R. Thomas Williamson.  "It's an opportunity to enjoy good times and camaraderie with the entire campus."

Festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with coffee and meeting with President Williamson in the Witherspoon Room of the McKelvey Campus Center.  The meeting will begin with a campus update from President Williamson and is followed by a question and answer session.

At 11 a.m. a family barbecue is planned at the Anderson Amphitheater, next to Brittain Lake.  This fun-filled event gives family and friends the opportunity to eat, visit, laugh, and purchase football game tickets. 

Family Day concludes with the Westminster College Titan football game versus the Frostburg State University Bobcats at 1 p.m.

Westminster College Hosts Triennial Alumni Weekend June 23-25

Westminster College is hosting a Triennial Alumni Weekend June 23-25.

 The Triennial Weekend includes: a classic car show on Saturday from 1-5 p.m. at Memorial Field House, decade gatherings, a seminar on DNA, pitch and putt, softball, volleyball, a golf outing, dining on the Senior Terrace, dancing in Old 77, and free time to visit with old friends.  The weekend also offers couples whose beginning was in the Wallace Memorial Chapel to renew their vows Saturday afternoon.  Sunday, alumni choir members will sing at the worship service, which is open to all alumni.

A Team of One at Westminster College

Jacqueline Pusztay, a sophomore political science major from Greenford, Ohio, and qualifying competitive skater in the U.S. Figure Skating Association, skates in competition as the only member of Westminster's Figure Skating Team.

Westminster Non-Traditional Students Active in Student Activities

Earlier this month four Westminster College Lifelong Learning students, George Austin, Brano Cikel, Laurie Duffee, and Debra Sanchez, combined to form one of the student bowling teams to benefit Big Brothers/Big Sisters.
