Westminster College has teamed with The Pittsburgh Promise to be a Preferred College Partner. Beginning with the class of 2018, Promise eligible students accepted to one of 19 area colleges partnering in this initiative will be provided grants for room, board, or books. Westminster promises to provide targeted transition and academic support services to ensure student retention and success.

The Westminster College School of Nursing is hosting an open house to highlight the services of the American Red Cross on Thursday, Oct. 5 from 4-7 p.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center. This event is free and open to the public.

Dr. David W. Goldberg, associate professor of philosophy, has earned the 2017-2018 Henderson Lectureship Award. Goldberg joined the Westminster faculty in 2002. He earned his B.A. and M.A. from Pennsylvania State University in Philosophy and was awarded a Ph.D.in Philosophy from Duquesne University.

Last semester, assistant professor of sociology Dr. Jamie Chapman was named a 2017 Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) Teaching and Learning Workshop Fellow. AKD is an international sociology honor society whose purpose is to promote excellence in scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, as well as other social and intellectual activities that will lead to improvement of the human condition.

Broadcast communications faculty Brad Weaver was awarded “Best in Show” in the faculty division of the Creative Works Competition at the Broadcast Education Association (BEA) On-Location 2017 Super-Regional Conference at Point Park University in Pittsburgh. BEA “is a premiere international academic media organization [that drives] insights, excellence in media production, and career advancement for educators, students, and professionals.”

Over the summer, junior business administration major Anthony Akoto learned he was returning to the States from his home in Ghana earlier than anticipated this semester. After putting countless hours into his application for the Management Leadership for Tomorrow (MLT) Career Prep program, Anthony received the great news he patiently waited for all summer— a position in the program! Soon after, he was invited and attended the MLT opening ceremony in Texas.

For the second year in a row, The Wall Street Journal/Times’ Higher Education College Ranking placed Westminster in the top 25% of higher education institutions in the nation. The 2018 College Ranking puts graduate success and student learning at its core by evaluating a combination of public data and survey responses from current students.

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the largest scientific professional organization, consisting of over 160,000 researchers, professors and engineers. Westminster professor of chemistry Dr. Peter Smith was elected as a councilor for the society in the industrial and engineering chemistry division.
