Sophomore business management and social policy major Emma Messett shared her experiences volunteering at the Joshua Casteel Catholic Worker House in Alliance, Ohio at a lecture held at the Jewish Community Center of Youngstown. Alongside associate professor of history Dr. Angela Lahr, Messett's presentation emphasized the community spirit that characterizes the Joshua Casteel Catholic Worker House while Lahr spoke about Dorothy Day, co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement.

Over 100 students in grades 6-12 from a variety of public and private schools in Lawrence, Mercer, Butler, Clarion, and Venango counties competed in National History Day at Westminster College on Thursday, March 15.

For the third year in a row, associate professor of Spanish Dr. Joel Postema and a few Westminster students traveled to the Dominican Republic for a medical mission trip. During the week-long trip, seniors and pre-medical students Madison Ordonez, Katelynn Morrell and Bridget Herlihy had the opportunity to work in clinics, shadowing and providing assistance to medical professionals in their future career fields.

In February, seven Westminster College mathematics majors and their faculty advisers participated in the 20th Annual Regional Student Paper Meeting at Youngstown State University. The conference was hosted by the Ohio XI chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon mathematics honor society, a society dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding.

On Saturday, April 7 in Orr Auditorium, Opera Westminster will present the full-scale opera “The Marriage of Figaro” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (in English) at 7:30 p.m. This light-hearted opera, directed by Mihai Valcu, will showcase faculty members and students from the School of Music and is open to the public for free admission.

Six seniors from the Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science Departments participated in the 2018 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (Pittcon) in Orlando, Florida. The students presented posters on their research and served as conference aids for the duration of the conference.

Art is a form of communication, enabling us to understand one another and empathize in a way that makes us all human. Senior fine art major Marcella Sinclair explored this avenue of her art by painting a series of 22 pieces for her capstone that showcased people who have impacted her life.

Westminster College’s Dance Theatre program will hit the stage once more for their eclectic tribute to pop icon Bruno Mars, properly titled “Finesse.” Performances will be held on March 22 and 23 at 8 p.m. There will also be Sunday matinee on March 25 at 2 p.m.

Seventeen teams from five high schools attended this year’s Westminster College High School Programming Contest hosted by the Mathematics and Computer Science Department and the Admissions Department. Participating schools included: Nichols School in Buffalo, NY (Coach Jason DeGroat); North Allegheny High School in Wexford, PA (Coach Laura Prosser); Seneca Valley High School in Harmony, PA (Coaches Diane Krauland and Chad Robertson); Wilmington High School in New Wilmington, PA (Coach Mary Beth Acker); and Elizabeth Forward High School in Elizabeth, PA (Coach Mary Wilson).

Junior criminal justice studies major Delaney Saxton and junior sociology minor Julianne Halmo were recently inducted into the National Sociology Honorary, Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD), at a ceremony and dinner. Alpha Kappa Delta derives its name from the first letters of the three Greek words that together signify the Society's goal: To study humankind for the purpose of service.
