Doing Our Thing (DOT), inspired by the well-loved program from the past, is a hands-on Saturday program for children in and around the New Wilmington area, designed to spark creativity, curiosity, and connection. Each session features engaging themed activities tied to children's literature, led by Westminster College faculty and community members, in collaboration with Westminster College students.
DOT is a collaboration between Westminster College and LIVE New Wilmington.
All sessions will be held in Patterson Hall on Westminster College’s campus; families can check in starting at 9:30am at the entrance by Beeghly Theater.
Doing Our Thing was founded in 1974 by former Westminster College Professor of Education, Dr. Clara Cockerille, alongside women from four New Wilmington community organizations. The founders wanted to create unique educational experiences for elementary-aged students that didn’t involve traditional classroom elements like textbooks or tests. Instead, they focused on creative courses to keep students engaged while they learn. The program continued to grow throughout the 90s, with over 200 children registering for events each year. We are excited to refresh the program and continue using Dr. Cockerille’s teaching philosophies to make interesting, hands-on classes that appeal to young learners.
Yes, there is space for 25 children for each session. If your child is registered after the session is filled, you will be notified and placed on a waiting list.
You will be contacted via email and be refunded.
There will be qualified Westminster College students assisting and two leaders per session. You are more than welcome to wait for your child(ren) in Beeghly Theater but not in the session.
Just be ready for lots of fun! Clothing should be comfortable and casual. All supplies will be included.
