Student Internship Showcase

When:

Thursday, November 4, 2021 — Thursday, November 18, 2021, 7:00 PM

Where:

Online; Zoom

Ever wonder what our students are doing inside and outside the classroom?  Join us for this virtual opportunity to listen and hear directly from some of our student interns who are working out in the field to complement their in-classroom learning.

In partnership with the Pleasant Hill Historians and Lawrence County Historical Society, the following four students will present on various topics.  The internships themselves were coordinated in cooperation with their faculty supervisors: Drs. Krantz, Clark, Martin, and Balczon and on-site by Andrew Henley '17, who will also assist in hosting the virtual sessions. Dr. John Winters, Visiting Assistant Professor of History will also contribute to the showcases.

Please Note: There is only ONE registration for all four sessions.  The same Zoom link will be utilized for all four and that link will appear in your confirmation email.

Receive the link and then join us online at the date and times listed below:

October 28, 7 PM: Ethan Brady

This presentation will highlight the internship work of Ethan Brady, a senior Environmental Science major from Westminster College. Brady's work culminated into a forestry report for Cascade Park. This report inventoried the park's trees and which ones might have been there when the park opened in 1897, based on measurements taken on specific trees. On June 10, 2021, Cascade Park was decided eligible for the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. This work assists in documenting the park's historic and ecological importance, utilizing historic photography, cartography, and documentation. Special thanks to our alumni host for this session, Ben Nelson '06, from the Board of Trustees Community Sustainability Committee.

November 4, 7 PM: Logan Minch

This presentation will highlight the internship work of Logan Minch, a senior History major from Westminster College. Minch's work focuses on the newly-opened Quaker Falls Recreation Area, located in Edinburg, Pennsylvania. This internship involves the processing of a recent donation from Youngstown State University to the Lawrence County Historical Society of all of the archaeological material that was excavated at the site by Dr. John White, a former professor from YSU. Minch will present some of the artifacts and context about the site. Special thanks to our alumni host for this session, Alexis Shellow '15.

November 11, 7 PM: Ryan Armstrong

This presentation will highlight the internship work of Ryan Armstrong, a sophomore honors History and Biology double major from Westminster College. Armstrong's work focuses on the "Melting Pot Project," which was initiated in 2017 at the Lawrence County Historical Society as a way of preserving the Immigration Collection through digitization. Armstrong is utilizing the height and weight documented in Lawrence County's Court of Common Pleas' Declarations of Intention to review the health of immigrants who declared their intent to become a citizen within Lawrence County. This collection contains over 8,000 individuals' declarations and offers some insight into the academic use of these records. Special thanks to our alumni host for this session, Harry Bittle '14.

November 18, 7 PM: Sara Small

This presentation will highlight the internship work of Sara Small, a senior Environmental Science and Project Management double major from Westminster College. Small's work culminated in an open source website, northhillhd.live, which focuses on the North Hill Historic District (New Castle, Pa.). This website offers a free marketing service to the North Hill Historic District, which is the third-largest historic district in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Small's project lays the foundation on a phase-based approach to build out a website and encourage access to information for renters and homeowners within the historic district and potential new homeowners. Special thanks to our alumni host for this session, Christie Nelson '06.
