On May 18, students from Sharpsville Area High School visited Westminster College as part of the American Chemical Society (ACS) ambassadors program— a chemistry and environmental science outreach program. The students got to experience college-level STEM coursework, with field, lab and classroom-based science activities.

Ferguson Scholarship for excellence in environmental science at the annual Bartramian Audubon Society Awards Ceremony on Monday, May 14, 2018. The ceremony was held at the Jennings Environmental Education Center in Slippery Rock, Pa.

The Drinko Center for Undergraduate Research at Westminster College is pleased to announce the second cohort of Summer Research Fellows. Student and faculty pairs from all academic disciplines were encouraged to apply for one of the highly competitive research fellowships, and only six were accepted for summer 2018.

The first cohort of students in the Environmental Project Management Academy (EPMA) will present the results of a solar energy feasibility study on Monday, May 7, from 5:30-6:30 p.m., at the New Wilmington Borough Building (134 High Street), immediately prior to the monthly Borough Council Meeting. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be provided.

A group of Westminster students participated in the Earth Fest at Penn State Shenango in Downtown Sharon, PA earlier this month. Earth Fest is an annual celebration full of family-oriented activities and entertainment to educate the community on environment issues and sustainability.

On Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Patterson Hall (room 207), Westminster College will host a safe drinking water workshop. Water resource educator with Penn State Extension Susan Boser will be on campus to discuss private water systems including tips for well maintenance and preventing contamination, common water problems in Pennsylvania and treatment options. Participants are able to bring a water sample for some basic on-site testing and find out about options for further drinking water testing by certified labs.

Six seniors from the Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Science Departments participated in the 2018 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (Pittcon) in Orlando, Florida. The students presented posters on their research and served as conference aids for the duration of the conference.
