Westminster chemistry professor honored with distinguished service award

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.— Dr. Peter Smith, professor of chemistry and chair of the chemistry and biochemistry department at Westminster College, was recently presented with the Louis J. Sacco Award for Distinguished Service to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Professional Relations.

Presented April 2 at the Spring 2019 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Orlando, the Louis J. Sacco Award recognizes those who have served the Division of Professional Relations in a meritorious and exemplary manner over a significant period of time. Smith served in the leadership of the Division from 2008-2018, first as treasurer and then in the chair succession.

Smith was nominated by Dr. Sarah Huffman Kennedy '02, biochemistry professor at Westminster from 2009-16. Kennedy, now assistant professor of biochemistry at Radford University in Radford, Va., ​​​​​​presented Smith with the award at the meeting in Orlando.

Smith, who has been with Westminster since 2002, earned an undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee.
