More than 50 Westminster College Residence Assistants and Residence Directors recently received training from the New Wilmington Fire Department.
The evening program involved Fire Department members introducing themselves, and sharing basic information about their department, the services they provide, and training requirements. Westminster Residence Life staff members introduced themselves, and described their responsibilities regarding fire safety. The Fire Department discussed the process used in fire drills and actual emergencies in residence halls, and provided some suggestions regarding emergency response and preparedness.
"The good news was that we already meet their expectations regarding the frequency of fire drills," said Molly Burnett Mistretta, assistant dean of student affairs, residence life, and leadership development. "The residence halls evacuate the buildings once a month. We have students practice leaving the buildings under a variety of conditions."
After the discussion, the Fire Department gave Residence Life Staff members a tour of the fire station, and allowed the students to examine and learn more about the equipment they use.
"We anticipate that we will continue to work with the Fire Department in the future," Mistretta said. "I was good to learn the names and faces on both sides, and hopefully, it will lead to better communication and teamwork if an emergency every arises."
