Preschool Class Study Seasons at Westminster Outdoor Lab

Posted on Friday, February 13, 2004

The Westminster Preschool class of four and five-year-olds recently took their second trip to the Westminster College Field Station, affectionately call the "Outdoor Lab" to study the seasons.

"We visited the nature lab in the fall, and again last week during the winter season," said Diana Reed, Westminster preschool teacher. "The children have made comparisons at each visit, such as the difference in the tree foliage, animal dwellings, and changes in the stream."

Dr. Clarence Harms, emeritus professor of biology, took the children on a wagon ride, while pointing out things like deer tracks, plant growth, and marsh life.

"His tractor ride was cold, bumpy, and fun," said one student. "He should be called Dr. Harmless, because he doesn't hurt any animals."

"The most important function of Westminster's Field Station is environmental awareness at all levels," Harms said. "Getting to know the outdoor and how we can protect it begins with children, and should continue through adulthood. Children are particularly interested and interesting. I never tire of seeing their faces when they spot an animal track or look at a deer mouse recently live-trapped. Oh, that we could keep that vigor and enthusiasm for new experiences all our lives!"

"The children are looking forward to a repeat trip in the spring for further exploration," Reed said.

The Westminster College Preschool Lab is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. This prestigious recognition has been achieved by only sever percent of early childhood programs nationwide. The school is committed to providing an excellent learning experience for children with innovative curriculum, well-trained staff, developmentally appropriate equipment, and individual attention.
