Brent Rodgers, a junior elementary education major with a minor in theatre at Westminster College, recently directed "The Music Man" at Riverside High School in Ellwood City.

"I applied for the job because Riverside needed a director, and I thought that it would be a worthwhile learning experience, especially since I am an elementary education major and theatre minor," Rodgers said. "At first I thought I might have trouble with the students because I was so close to their age, but I had no problems with the students being disrespectful. It was challenging schedule, especially since the students had many other activities going on. I had to work out a schedule that revolved around everything, and it wasn't easy."

The project began in November, but time became a major problem when spring semester began at Westminster College.

"I had to drive home nightly and every weekend to hold rehearsals and help with the set construction," Rodgers said. "I can't say how many hours I have spent on the project because it's one of those projects that always had me working or thinking."

"I have learned a lot from Westminster both in education and theatre classes that made this experience go smoothly," Rodgers said. "Educational Psychology class helped me manage and motivate the students, and theatre courses were helpful in the actual production."

"My first goal for the future is to become an elementary teacher, but while I do that I want to continue to direct high school, community and youth theatre," Rodgers continued. "As a teacher and a director, my goal is to instill an appreciation of theatre and the arts in students."

Rodgers is a son of Scott and Colleen Rodgers, and a graduate of Riverside High School.
