Westminster College Get Real! Series Opens with Budgeting and Managing Debt Session

Posted on Wednesday, September 12, 2012

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - David Smith, Westminster College associate professor of accounting, will present "Budgeting and Managing Debt" Tuesday, Sept. 18, as the fall semester's first session of the "Get Real!" life preparation series.

Smith will present techniques students can use to survive after college in a world that encourages and pressures us to buy, even if we don't have the money. Students will learn how to avoid a crisis that will eventually follow when they have to pay and can't, and also learn about the dangers of debt.

Smith, who joined the Westminster faculty in 2004, earned an undergraduate degree from Bucknell University, a master's degree in taxation from Robert Morris University, an M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, and is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania.

Sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs, the "Get Real!" series is a program that acquaints students with life after college.  It provides helpful advice on financial planning; banking; medical care; consumer and personal legal matters; apartment, auto, and house hunting; getting the most out of leisure activities; and preparing for lifelong relationships.

Each workshop covers a different topic and runs from 12:40-1:40 p.m. in the McKelvey Campus Center.  Additional sessions scheduled for this semester are: "Wheels and Deals" (Oct. 9); "Investing for Beginners" (Nov. 13); "How Will I know? Partnering for Life and Love" (Feb. 19) and "World Events and You!" (March 19).
