Dar Huey '74 Earns Westminster AV Service and Support Award

Posted on Tuesday, October 25, 2011

Dr. Dar Huey, a 1974 Westminster College graduate and professor of education, earned Westminster's 2011 Audio Visual Service and Support Award

Huey was an English teacher at Mayfield (Ohio) High School before returning to Westminster as an instructor in the education department.  He began his tenure in AV Services as a graduate assistant and became director in 1977, a position he held for nearly a decade.

In his role as director, Huey guided Westminster through the decision of committing to VHS over beta format recordings and supervised the centralization of media resources, an important step in the instructional media and media support capacity that AV Services fills today.

Huey served as chair of Westminster's Department of Education for 12 years before stepping into the role of director of the graduate program.  He served as assistant football coach (1976-1990) and defensive coordinator (1991-1998), making him an integral part of some of the finest Titan football teams in Westminster's storied history.

Gary Swanson '88, current director of AV Services, was thrilled with the judges' selection of Huey for the award: "The award committee was unanimous in recognizing that there are few people who exemplify this award more.  Dar's unlimited access and commitment to outstanding teaching - not only from his undergraduate and graduate level classrooms, but also from the roles he's so excellently served as coach, mentor, father, and friend, all of which he performs humbly yet with a zest rarely paralleled - make him an obvious selection for this award."

Huey and his wife, Sally Keener Huey '74, live in New Wilmington and are the parents of two daughters.

The award is open to all qualifying Westminster alumni and is an annual presentation that coincides with International Audio Visual Week.  Previous honorees include 2007 winner Mark Slezak '87, an elementary teacher from Hermitage; 2008's Denny Wolfe '97, an Emmy Award-winning ESPN producer; 2009 honoree Betsy Nolan Sieg '07, purchasing manager for Metro Bank; and 2010 winner Todd Hervey '94, award-winning special projects director/editor at Fuel Creative, Inc.
