Posted on Thursday, October 20, 2011

Westminster College's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science hosted alumnus Dr. Wallace Growney for a map coloring colloquium Oct. 14.

Growney presented his research related to the Four Color Theorem that states that any map of contiguous regions can be properly colored with four colors.  He discussed the history of the problem, his doctoral research and subsequent contributions, and described the eventual proof of the theorem.

Growney, a 1961 graduate who majored in physics, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma.  He was professor of mathematics and management sciences at Susquehanna University, where he was an innovator in computer science and information systems; visiting scholar at Harvard; and a consultant for technology firms nationwide.
