Westminster College will host the 72nd annual Pennsylvania Communication Association (PCA) convention Oct. 7-9.
This year's conference, "Communication Praxis: Linking Teaching, Scholarship and Engagement in an Active Life," includes 23 traditional sessions, a poster session, and keynote address. Dr. Martin Medhurst of Baylor University will give the keynote address on Saturday and receive the Julia T. Wood Award. Conference planner is Dr. Colleen Burke, Westminster associate professor of communication studies and vice president of the PCA.
Participating Westminster faculty are:
• Dr. Keith Corso, assistant professor of speech communication, responding to a panel on media and technology
• Dr. Scott Mackenzie, associate professor of theatre, presenting a spotlight session on theatre and community engagement
• Brittany Rowe-Cernivicius, public relations instructor, and Bradley Weaver, broadcast and digital communications lecturer, presenting their work
Westminster junior public relations major Kelly Matune will receive the organization's Voices of Tomorrow College Communicator of the Year Award at Saturday's banquet.
The award recognizes excellent communicators at the college level. It is presented to a student who excels in curricular and extracurricular communication or work, uses communication skills in a service capacity, and demonstrates the promise of future leadership through communication.
"In her work at Westminster College, Kelly always does beyond what is asked of her," said Burke, who nominated Matune. "She is professional and polished in all of her interactions with others and she more than exemplifies the typical Voices of Tomorrow Award recipient."
Matune serves as public relations manager for Westminster's AV Services and as camp counselor for Westminster's Drinko Center Bright Futures Camp.
"I am honored to have been nominated for this award," Matune said. "Westminster individuals, including Gary Swanson [director of AV Services] and [Dr.] Patrick Krantz [Drinko Center director] have presented me with so many great opportunities. I have them to thank for my experience thus far."
Matune is a daughter of Frank and Doreen Matune of Hermitage and a graduate of Kennedy Catholic High School.
