Spanish Professor to Speak about Don Juan at Faculty Forum

Posted on Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Dr. Jeffrey Bersett, Westminster College associate professor of Spanish, will speak on his research in 20th-century parody and satire in Spanish theatre at Faires Faculty Forum Wednesday, March 2, at 11:40 a.m. in the Sebastian Mueller Theater of the McKelvey Campus Center.

Bersett's presentation, "It's Raining Tenorios: Zorrilla's Don Juan in the 20th Century," will offer an overview of his ongoing research and the phenomenon that grew around José Zorrilla's Don Juan Tenorio.

Bersett will examine several comedic works from 1900-1936, describing the cultural developments they represent and how they reveal the political, social, and artistic climates in which they were written and performed.

Bersett, who also serves as director of off-campus study and chair of Westminster's Department of Modern Languages, joined the faculty in 2002.  He earned an undergraduate degree from Washington University and master's and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

Faculty Forum was established in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Faires, Westminster professor of mathematics emerita, during her term as Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Faculty members from all disciplines volunteer to present lectures on their current research, artistic productions, and/or scholarship of teaching and learning.  Each forum presents new ideas with innovative lecture techniques.
