Mathematics Faculty Participated in Joint Mathematics Meeting

Posted on Tuesday, February 15, 2011

Four current faculty and one emerita member of Westminster College's Department of Mathematics and Computer Science participated in the Joint Mathematics Meeting Jan. 6-9 in New Orleans.

Dr. Jeffrey Boerner, assistant professor, is a Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) fellow who attended many panel discussions focused on teaching mathematics effectively to undergraduates.

"I got ideas for potential undergraduate research as well as new directions for my own research," Boerner said.

Dr. Carolyn Cuff, professor, led an invited workshop on "Teaching Introductory Statistics," with Dr. Michael Posner of Villanova University.

Dr. David Offner, assistant professor and Project NExT fellow, presented "Packing the Hypercube" and served as a judge for the Undergraduate Research Poster Session.

Dr. Pamela Richardson, assistant professor, presented "Centroids of Jordan Superalgebras over Superscalars" in a special session on Lie Algebras, Algebraic Groups, and Related Structures.  She was the only faculty member from a small college invited to speak in that session.  She began a three-year term on the Committee on Undergraduate Student Activities and Chapters, a national committee of the Mathematics Association of America (MAA).

Dr. Barbara Faires, professor emerita, led committee meetings as the elected secretary of the MAA.
