AV Services Helps Recycle 6,000 pounds of Electronics

Westminster College's Audio Visual Services wrapped up its AV Week activities and participated in "Make a Difference Day" with its third e-recycling drive Oct. 23 at Hoyt Science Resources Center.

AV staff members, including assistant director Katie Bittner and several students, assisted a crew from A GreenSpan Computer Recycling, Inc., in collecting over 6,000 pounds of electronic devices, bringing the total from the three Westminster events to 11,000 pounds.

Recycled items included everything from old computers and monitors to gaming systems, microwave ovens, televisions, and other outdated technology. A small fee was charged for each item collected.

A GreenSpan is a certified E-Steward, meaning they have been approved as an electronics recycler that responsibly reuses and/or safely breaks down the items within North America. The fees collected help cover that expense.

"Each drive has been more successful than the previous one," said Rachael Hoffman, AV Services operations manager and a senior psychology major. "Word seems to be spreading, so, to meet demand, we are planning another event in April."

Hoffman is a daughter of Walter and Patricia Hoffman of Transfer and a graduate of Reynolds High School.

"We recognize the tremendous impact that our department alone can have on the environment," Bittner said. "Since we use a variety of resources from paper to projectors, our environmental footprint can be large. We attempt to maximize the usefulness of materials through several green initiatives and encourage others to do the same."
